"And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same." -Marianne Williamson
This past weekend was a life changing one. As a devoted and maybe obsessive fan of Lecrae, I felt that I needed to read his book "Unashamed". Little did I know it would stir up something in my spirit and reveal more about me even though it's mostly about him.
I was reminded of two things: grace and my purpose.
In a world where "God" the word is censored, I am his instrument and if I hold back the grace I've been given, it will not be extended to others. In a world full of religious people, I am called to live unashamedly –as the broken, full of sin, corrupted, confused, unholy person I am so that people like me may know how in Christ I am made whole.
"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?" - and not shoving a list of do’s and don'ts down their throats.
I am God's poem to the world. A piece that articulates the heart, mind and character of the poet. That I am to reach out with God's perfect love to everyone, everyone and not only people who share my faith, everyone no matter who they are; to shine the light in me upon them and unconsciously give them permission to let theirs shine too.
That as art, I may give glory to God, my creator and as the artist he has made; serve his people who he loves unconditionally.
Through one man's unashamed story of brokenness, failure and being found in his [God's] grace, my purpose was revealed. To unapologetically express my faith. Be unashamed. Let my light shine (and other people will do the same). Be an instrument, a poem -reflect the character of the poet who is also an unconditional lover. Serve people and give God the glory. Be art and an artist as he intended me to be. And in doing so, through me, let him extend his grace to the rest of the world.
This past weekend, I was given courage to keep creating. With every art and artist broken story, someone will be made whole, with every joyful one, another filled with hope and through it all everyone know of this love that is unconditional, full of mercy and grace because if I were to make myself lovable in his sight, I would not have been able to anyway.
Don't hold back. God wants to use you too, art and artist.
